As a huge Jessi Kirby fan I must say I had really high expectations for Golden; I mean the rest of her books were fantastic. So going in, I had no idea what I was going to expect, besides the fact that it is a contemporary, and as a senior in high school it's last chance to take chances.
Out of all the protagonists, whether it be in Moonglass, In Honor, or Golden, I have to to say Parker Frost of Golden is my favorite. She was the one character who I, Ishita Singh, nerdy Indian girl could honestly relate to. Like me she played high school somewhat safe. High school was just this path to college, and then a job, you know? She focused on academics, and tried to make the perfect application, she had her best friend but she wasn't the super popular girl, or the girl that went to parties. She was the girl who had a crush but was too scared to make a move. I honestly believed while reading Golden that I was reading about myself.
Parker's development as person was my favorite. As she slowly discovered who she is, she unraveled this whole romantic love story with the towns two legendary teenagers who are presumed to have died in a horrid accident. The slow unraveling, of the romance, the mystery, and Parker's growth was the definite charm of the whole book. My favorite part was that the main character was more involved with her surroundings and solving the mystery versus her own personal romance. It was refreshing to what is common in YA, and allowed the characters to develop on their own w/o some guy or girl to lean on.
Overall I fell in love with Kirby's Golden and definitely cannot wait until her next book. She has done everything but disappoint with Golden and you will love every minute of this book. I honestly reccomend this to everyone you know; mom,dad, second aunt removed, friend, everyone, this is one book that you must share and spread the love with.
