Review: The Karma Club by Jessica Brody

Madison Kasparkova always thought she understood how Karma works. Do good things and you'll be rewarded, do something bad and Karma will make sure you get what you deserve.

But when Maddy’s boyfriend cheats on her, nothing bad comes his way. That’s why Maddy starts the Karma Club, to clean up the messes that the universe has left behind. Sometimes, though, it isn’t wise to meddle with the universe.

It turns out Karma often has plans of its own.
Karma, a concept that I know oh so well. My whole life I have been taught how to maintain "good" karma; you know, don't do bad things, be peaceful, etc. Though an ancient thought, Brody did a fantastic job applying the concept of Karma in the modern context.

Madison Kasparkova is what I would call your average happy teenage girl. She has the emotions and drama, but she is surrounded by good friends, and a great boyfriend. But when all of that those go haywire she has the perfect idea on how to get revenge. Use karma. *Tip: DO NOT MESS WITH KARMA, BAD THINGS HAPPEN!* Now in the beginning Madison and her friends get exactly what they want, but over time everything bad in the world is directed towards Madison and her friends.

Brody became one of my favorite contemp authors with The Karma Club. The novel was full of humor and was light read. I was in a slump for a while, and The Karma Club was the perfect cure. Brody crafted the story of how every girl thinks when she wants revenge. The thoughts were totally accurate...the actions, not so much. I thoroughly enjoyed the humor and Maddy's wit through out the novel.

It was a great introduction to Brody's writing, and has gotten me hooked to all her books aka Ishita is now a new fan! It wasn't something completely different, but the approach to the story was unique. Each character was well thought out and developed, and the relationships between the friends was just refreshing. There was no backstabbing and hurting the other friend to move ahead. The trio stuck together through thick and thin, and the missions they all took for revenge were plain ingenious!

Throughout the novel I had many "LOL" or "LMFAO" moments. It was the quick, exciting  fun read that most teenage girls will love. If you are in a slump try The Karma Club, and fans of Morgan Matson and Miranda Kenneally will probably enjoy it as well. Just saying, this movie would make an epic chick flick *hint-hint* make this a movie*wink-wink*. Overall I would give The Karma Club a 4/5.
