Review: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian (Lux, #1)
Starting over sucks. When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up. And then he opened his mouth. Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot alien living next door marks me.You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades. If I don't kill him first, that is.

I delved into Obsidian with the intention of avoiding expectations for one simple reason--I didn't want to end up disappointed since I have so much adoration for the Covenant books, Jennifer L. Armentrout's other series. To my surprise and delight, I quickly found that my worry was pointless. Why? Because this book is certainly equally amazing, if not even more so, next to Half-Blood and its sequel.

Best thing about this novel? Female protagonist Katy is a book blogger. Yeah, that's right. She's a book blogger just like me and many others out there. Is that not all sorts of awesome?! I was practically bound to love Katy from the start. Besides, she's also intelligent and stubborn in an admirably persistent sort of way.  And then, of course, there's Daemon Black. Daemon, Daemon, Daemon...what are we going to do with this jerk of an inhuman gorgeous boy?! Put Katy and Daemon together and there's only one way to describe it--as Katy's friend Lesa says, "Holy hawt chemistry, Batman!"

Romance isn't the only bright spot in Obsidian. In fact, I was thoroughly captivated by the unique description of the aliens, called Luxen, as well as the ongoing external conflict surrounding the Luxen presence on Earth. Secondary characters like Dee, Daemon's sister, contributed their own stories that strengthened the plot even more.

I can't wait to read the next book, Onyx, which releases in just a few short months. JLA fans or even those of you who are unfamiliar with her books, I highly recommend this action-packed, humor-filled romantic sci-fi jewel. You will not be disappointed.

Rating: 5/5 stars
