Review of Lola and the Boy Next Door

Lola and the Boy Next Door

The Summary

Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit -- more sparkly, more fun, more wild -- the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.
When Cricket -- a gifted inventor -- steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

The Review      After coming back from vacation I found Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy next Door in my Mailbox, and let me tell you i was super excited :D. So after finishing Anna ( I do have a review up) I ended up reading Lola, which I must say I ended up loving just as much as  Anna and the French Kiss!
If I compare both books i really enjoyed the humor so much more in Anna, but the story In Lola was so much more cuter ( as you can tell from so far, you will see the very girly side of me)...but humor was also really good as well. So overall both had there own pluses (no minuses).
Stephanie Perkins did a great job putting Anna and Etienne in Lola and the Boy next door. Usually in companions the other characters are just there, not a main feature in the book, but In Lola(as i will now refer to it) they were crucial parts in the story ( can't say how or why-can't ruin the book...duhhh ;), but they are). The story was very flowed though Lola she fell for me :(
I love her spunkieness, so when she went through this "mourning period" or like in the book it says she went "goth" I hated that. I love black, but i prefer a character who loves herself for who she is, and doesn't try to change herself for a guy, or change herself because she knows she can't have the guy. I love fashion, and Lola's passion for it was great, Her stlye is more out there than mine, yea i wear genie pants and Indian clothes to school...but that's really it...but Lola if only i was that awesome!
Other than whole romance aspect, I enjoyed the back story there is through the whole book. And the humor was enjoyable as well, especially between Nora, and her Fathers! I loved her fathers and fathers because she has two awesome dad's ! But i didn't like her 'hot' rocker boyfriend in the beginning...he was such a butt! (want to use more crude language but will not)...and in the mention of guys, and we finished talking about Lola....
Let's talk about... CRICKET ! So many would think a guy with that name must be creepy...NO! He is anything but...he is this sweet, sensitive, graceful, inventive, and fashion forward guy attending Berkeley!...and Oh yea he's 6 feet 4 inches...not including his hair (which defies gravity) ! This is my dream guy ! So when hearing the name Cricket, I knew he would be amazing....I am very odd i know, but I found that name so freaking attracting (sorry fan girl again)! So yes, he is not one of my favorite guys in the whole wide world!
So overall I fell head over heels for Cricket,  enjoyed Lola's fashion sense, and of course enjoyed the humor....so I must say Stephanie Perkins did it again...She re-created a great story that was realistic, funny, and well real! (that was redundant). But yes this book definitely deserves a 5/5 on my scale !  And this book comes out in September, so EVERYONE get this ! but read Anna First !!!!!

Review: Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead. So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay. When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.
But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.

Review of Anna and the French Kiss

Anna and the French KissThe Summary
Anna can't wait for her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a good job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. So she's not too thrilled when her father unexpectedly ships her off to boarding school in Paris - until she meets Etienne St. Clair, the perfect boy. The only problem? He's taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her crush back home. Will a year of romantic near-misses end in the French kiss Anna awaits?

The Review
I fell in love with this book....or more like with St.Clair ;). I never really liked YA Contemp novels, but had to read this book...the book just sounded to amazing! So I am so glad i got this book for #RAK because well, it was Amazing !
Anna and the French Kiss, had this natural and realistic feel to it. While reading most books, you fall in love but you know it can never happen, but Stephanie Perkins made this book so realistic that, well I can actually believe things like this do happen! Well other than the part where I can find my own St.Clair.
Now since I have already mentioned him, let's discuss....
St.Clair is everything a girl can want! First, american born but has a British accent *swoon*! But then there is more...he is absolutely French ! Is there anything more perfect! I mean look at his name 'Etienne' ! It's just *swoon* ! But he is also this sweet charismatic guy, and oh so romantic! If i tell you what he does, well it will ruin his charm for you...maybe....hmmm...
He is also told to be short, though I can't picture him at all being short, though maybe he is- but just taller than me...no one is shorter than...so i guess that's why I couldn't picture him short, because short for me is really short! He is just truly amazing, even if his life sucks most of the time and he has the worst father available!
Other than swooning over St.Clair, I also enjoyed the other characters....especially Anna. She is a confused and frustrated teen. I completely understand her, and she isn't the one girl who is always tormenting and says yes to everyone. She acts like a real human, she says no, she speaks her mind, but I guess she can't see clearly how St.Clair loves her, and well she is clueless...she is like me....other than the part where i am shipped off to France, and meet an amazing guy ( if only).
And by far other than the guy, and the realistic-ness this book is too funny. Almost every page i busted out laughing at the jokes and well reactions and actions of everyone...for example:

"He pats his way around the the bed and slides back in. "Ow," he says.

"yes?" "My belt. Would it be weird..." I'm thankful he can't see me blush."Of course not." And I listen to the slap of leather, s he pulls it out of his belt loops. He lays it gently on my hardwood floor. "Um," he says. "Would it be weird-" "yes" "Oh, piss off. I'm not talking trousers. I only want under the blankets. That breeze is horrible." He slides underneath, and now we're lying side-by-side. In my narrow bed. Funny, but I never never imagined my first sleepover with a guy being, well, a sleepover."

By far this is one of my favorite reads this year and well it was amazing ! This book is already out so go and get it, because you wont regret it ! :D this book totally deserves a 5/5 for being realistic, and just so fluid and natural! Thanks Stephanie Perkins, for this and Lola :D and next year Isla :D

Review of Paradox the Angels are Here

Paradox - The Angels Are Here (Paradox #1)

The Summary

Nine hundred years ago, under the complete cover of darkness, the Grigorian army rose silently from their underground lair and attacked the Bulguardian Royal Palace. The bloody and violent battle between the two most legendary houses raged on. All but destroying the majestic Royal City of Altair.
It was not the first war that Juliette had endured between good and evil. And it most certainly would not be her last.
Today, a little girl's world is turned upside down by a visitor, the Angel of Death. She finds herself trapped in a nightmare, consumed by her paralyzing loss and overwhelming grief. The haunting visions and untimely deaths of others are a constant reminder that life and death are only a heartbeat away

My Review (Could not finish the Book)
I received an e-book of Paradox from the Author for review a month or so ago, I stalled reading it for a while, until about 3 hours ago when I started reading on my flight from Brussels to Chicago.  And well in these three hours I have realized this book is not meant for me.
The Biggest reason for me having trouble finishing the book was the writing style. It was a mix, of very sophisticated words next very I guess juvenile words (not that juvenile or sophisticated is bad, I don’t like them mixed together), it made the writing inconsistent in language. While reading I also ended up comparing this book to many other books I have read now days that have to do with angels, and from comparison this book wasn’t able to match up to many books out there. I can’t say much about this book since I wasn’t able to complete it, so I can’t give it a rating.
Others new to Reading books related to angels will enjoy it more than I did, and maybe it was me, and my crazy opinions (and my not so good idea of creating comparisons) that stopped me from completing the book as a whole. So for any new readers to this genre I recommend you give this book a chance, you might end up liking it. This just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Review of Oubliette

Cover Image

The Summary via Barns and Noble

Reychel thought she was finally free. She was wrong.

Everyone saw her gift of prophecy as a blessing, but her gift is uncontrollable. No one alive can teach her to manipulate her unique gift and the answers she needs lie buried within a madman’s journals.
She’s thrust in the midst of a brewing war and the only uniting factor for her people is their belief in the Prophet. Will Reychel learn to control her gift or will she be forced to deliver a false prophecy that could lead her people into a violent, unwinnable war?

My Review
So as most of you know, I was on vacation In India for the past month. And the Journey lasts almost 24 hours (just on the plane) plus there are the stops….So in those 24 hours guess what I did… I Read ! And watched movies of course, but I did a lot of reading! During the whole trip I read almost 8 paperback books, and 2 e-books….and much of the e-reading was done on the Plane Ride….so yea, this is what I did…I think I should get to the review now….So Here is my review for Oubliette…
The Real Review ;)
Oubliette is the second book in the Cloud Prophet Trilogy, and well I have to say one thing…the series just got better. Usually in series, the books end up getting worse and worse, but Surprisingly Oubliette is just as intriguing as the first book; Anathema.
What is the best part of the series as a whole is that, it is a refreshing taste to YA fiction. There is the confusing romance, and the awesome powers; but the presentation itself of the book is different and unique. This being for these reasons

  • ·         There is a whole new fantasy kingdom, but there is just the right amount of info needed for the description of the lifestyle and scenery and everything else describing the Kingdoms at war. There is not an overdose of info anywhere.
  • ·         The lead protagonist can say “No”, she doesn’t say “Yes” to everything, and she speaks and follows what she believes.
  • ·         While reading you can’t expect anything. While in many novels, you can expect what will happen in the next scene and even in the end of the book even if you haven’t made it half way through. ( These are the types of books I prefer, I don’t like knowing what will happen, it ruins the magic of the story)
  • ·         And lastly while reading, all you want is more. I got yelled ( well told repeatedly) to turn off my laptop and to stop reading on the plane (from the parents) because they wanted me to do something else, I gladly did while reading The Heart of Darkness, but when it came to Oubliette’s turn I just couldn’t. I had to finish the book (or e-book for me).
  • ·         Plus the leading male, isn’t the most gorgeous, strong, or perfect guy…He feels the most the real out most males in books. He has many flaws, put he is a sweetheart and a romantic. So he may not be perfect, but he is charming and sweet enough to make and girl love him.
So these, are 4 of my main reasons for loving Oubliette as much as I did. All I have to do now is get a Severed the final book in the series. I can’t wait to know what happens to Reychel, of course Mark, and well the rest of the Kingdom as well. So my rating for Oubliette is a 4.5/5 because the book is great but it is not perfect (one flaw being like the first book, it is too short! It is really that I want more, plus there is always that margin for improvement).

Review of Lockdown : Escape from Furnace

Lockdown (Escape From Furnace, #1)

The Summary (Via Goodreads)
Furnace Penitentiary: the world’s most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth’s surface. Convicted of a murder he didn't commit, sentenced to life without parole, “new fish” Alex Sawyer knows he has two choices: find a way out, or resign himself to a death behind bars, in the darkness at the bottom of the world. Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below. And behind everything is the mysterious, all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself, whose unthinkable acts have consequences that stretch far beyond the walls of the prison.
Together with a bunch of inmates—some innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killers—Alex plans an escape. But as he starts to uncover the truth about Furnace’s deeper, darker purpose, Alex’s actions grow ever more dangerous, and he must risk everything to expose this nightmare that’s hidden from the eyes of the world.

Beneath Heaven is Hell
Beneath Hell is Furnace
I won this book in a giveaway, and I entered because the story seemed pretty good. I entered the book not expecting much to be truthful, and well the book proved me wrong. This book ended up being amazing. Maybe it was because the hero was not your typical hero, or that in the whole book, was a completely new concept, with no romance, or there was not a single female character.
The first thing you find out in the book, that this will not be your normal YA-fiction where, the "Hero" is a good guy. Alex is your anything but average 14 year-old. He is the teenager who has turned to crime, and well he's a criminal. The character building and finding the depths of Alex ( finding out who he is, and seeing his thought process) really created a vivid book. While reading you never felt he was a "fake" character, the way he acted and the way he was created, made him feel so real, how imperfect he was made the book perfect.
While reading the Furnace world, was this prison like no other. You can easily visualize what was going on and what the world looked like. You see the rock walls, and red lights flickering, and the scary part you can see the "musculey" dogs walking and chasing the prisoners. I want to describe the book more, but then the magic of it will get ruined, so on to the next topic...
So i guess there wasn't exactly a Guy to really gush over, especially since they were teenagers in prison, but Alex's roomie, Donovan seemed liked a good guy. I mean he accidently killed someone, and that to for a good reason...but that's besides the point. He seemed like a good guy..sorta, so i guess he was the closest guy you can gush over.
What surprised me the most was that, in this jail so to speak, there wasn't a single female! I get most criminals end up being male, but females commit murders and crime as well ( not that I'm saying that's a good thing) but this jail had only teenage boys, and some younger, and there was no portion in the book there was a female equivalent....hmmm...that was something to think about. But yea that was probably the most shocking fact for me...
Mr. Smith did a great job with Lockdown, and I can't wait till I have enough money to get..

I would give Lockdown a 4.5/5 or 5/5 , this was a fantastic book, and was a refreshing read !

Interview with Kate Fuentes ( Elements)

Elements: The Beginning

Hi Guys ! If you have read my Review of Elements HERE , you can tell I enjoyed the book! I read it a couple of months ago, and now I have finally got a chance to put my interview up with the Author of Elements, Kate Fuentes! So here is the Interview! ...

Fishy: For most authors, there is always someone or something that inspires the authors to write. What was your Muse/Inspiration/or Support system that got you into writing your debut Novel Elements?

Kate: My oldest son requested for me to write a bedtime story for he and his little brother so we could read before going to bed.  I began putting together a short story but eventually got carried away and ended up creating a novel. My intentions were to have the novel bound and give it to them at Christmas but then I had a change of heart and decided to make it a demonstration and learning process for all of us. My husband and I consistently tell our children to go after their dreams, that anything is possible. My goal in publishing my first novel was to show my kids I wasn’t just saying the words, but actually living by them as well. I don’t want my sons to have a tarnished perspective of ‘what could have been’ if they never put the effort out in the first place and how would they learn from experience if I didn’t indeed lead by example.

Fishy: When writing Elements, out of all the places the boys would move, why did you pick New Zealand?

Kate: I chose New Zealand because I have often wanted to go there and also because I was entirely intrigued by the native Maori people who have such rich traditions and interesting history. I knew by creating Maori characters that surrounded the twins in the story as mentors, I would be able to tie in my own fantasy of traveling to the beautiful country. Being a fiction writer does have its perks, I got to take a literary journey through the pages of my own book and image the lush landscape of Thorn Ranch basking in the sun down under.
Fishy:  If you had to pick a favorite character, who would it be, and why?

Kate: That is a difficult question! I solely based my twins on the real life characteristics of my own children, so the honest and diplomatic answer is I love them both equally. I have detailed what they look like in reality, their food preferences, personality traits and obvious differences. Although, I would be quite interested to see how young readers will choose their favorites as many of the YA books today have teen book throbs and YA crush tourny’s. I would have to say Maui would be very close to my heart, who doesn’t love a bachelor full of wit, humor and evident fashion handicaps!

Fishy: What can we expect in book two of the Elements series?

Kate: I am currently half way through book 2 and I’m thoroughly enjoying the twists and turns of the new journey. Readers can expect more adventure, definite portal lapses, possible love interests, malicious intentions, exceedingly more elemental capabilities and new surprises. Those who have read my first book understand it ended on a cliff hanger and will be looking for the location of a certain character; sorry, no spoilers! I have continued to incorporate a heavy layer of moral and immoral situations for readers to experience and decipher for themselves what they would do if confronted with such a position. I like to see how often I can blur the lines between reality and fantasy without it being blatantly recognizable.

Now for some random questions....

Fishy:  If you were given an all powerful Genie, what three wishes would you make, and why?

Kate: I find myself stalling to see if I should answer politically correct or answer whimsically…. I’ll go with whimsical:
An endless closet of rotating high heels/platforms which styles change daily and they are organized by color. Of course, I have the option to keep any favorites I might have along the way for the archives. (Some have called my love of shoes an obsession, but I refer to it as an appreciation!)
A Learjet on stand-by at my beck and call ready to whisk my family and I anywhere in the world we would like to go, for a lifetime. Fuel costs included and an endless credit card limit. Oh… and Gordon Ramsey as our personal chef except he has to be nice and reserve his potty mouth for his other day job!
I saved the best for last but truth be told I really do hope this comes true: I would ask for both my children (when they get older, much older) to find the love of their life in a nice girl who has a kind heart, sense of compassion, integrity, and loves them back ardently. What mother doesn’t want that for her children? But let me just stress again, much older…after college kind of older…years from now older… stay back ladies…
Fishy:  What were favorite books of 2011? ( It can be any Genre or language)

Kate: I love all different genres but so far this year I had a few fav’s. CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS by Cassandra Clare, OUTLANDER series by Diana Gabaldon. I haven’t had much time to read as often as I like because I’m working on getting book 2 completed by the end of this year along with working full time, sports schedules, family vacations, etc.
Fishy: Now the Classic Question: If you were stuck on a deserted Island...What 5 things would you bring?

Kate: I know you said things but some of my answers include people. Sorry, I’m a rebel and don’t always follow the rules.
          1) Family (if I’m going to be stuck, so are they!)
          2) Bear Grylls (survivalist, someone needs to feed us!)
          3) Sunscreen
          4) Kindle
          5) Captain Jack Sparrow (he makes me laugh and could come in handy)

Thanks Kate for doing this interview with me ! I just can't wait for Book 2 ! And for everyone else, you should really read Elements, it was a fun read :) Click HERE for my Review of Elements by Kate Fuentes

Review of The Goddess Test

The Summary (Via Goodreads)
It's always been just Kate and her mom—and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.

Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld—and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.

Kate is sure he's crazy—until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.
My Review
Being a lover of Mythology, I already knew I would love this book. Being a girl who reads tons of reviews, knew this book was going to be an amazing read. Even though I could tell I was going to like it, I tried to enter the book without any preconceptions of how great it was, so I wouldn't be disappointed just incase....and let me tell you I was anything but !
Aimee Carter did a fantastic job twisting and creating a whole new "groove" to Greek Mythology. By tweaking myths in a way that the myths were still the same, but just had more depth and feel. Until about the end i had no clue which god was who (except for Henry, Ella, and Theo) , which made the book interesting to read. While reading it was difficult to figure out what will happen ( which is a good thing) except for the general, the lead girl and lead male will be together, etc.
The lead female protagonist, Kate, was also very inspiring. She was brave, strong, and willing. Her bravery was not for slaying a dragon, but it was much more, she let her mother die (for her mothers good- she basically let her go when she could not be cured), she agreed to take tests given my the Council (of Gods) so she can keep her mother alive a bit longer, she saves a "friend" even though she tried to kill her, and well there's a lot more. In many reviews i saw people didn't like Kate- Well I'm the complete opposite. I felt she was a strong female role, who wasn't always complaining when her dream guy wasn't around.
While reading, I fell in-love with Henry, but not as much as other Male characters in other books. Henry is the God of the Underworld aka Hades, looks 22-ish, and should be a male model. He doesn't express his feelings to much but while reading you can see his love for Kate. Henry may be everything Godly, but I can't find him swoon worthy (being millions of years old really doesn't help). BUT! There is also James, aka Hermes. He may not be the hottest man alive, but for some reason i felt more attracted to him then Henry. His actions made him a sweetheart. I could tell he had feelings for Kate, and he tried everything to protect her.
Overall this was a great read, and i can't wait for....
Goddess Interrupted (Goddess Test, #2)

I would rate the Goddess Test a 4.5/5 because, it wasn't perfect, but it was enjoyable, unique, fun, and well a great read. :)

Their sudden appearance sends Skye's life into a tailspin. She has no idea what they want, or why they seem to follow her every move--only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past.

In the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye finds herself coming to terms with the impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Torn between Asher, who she can't help falling for, and Devin, who she can't stay away from, the consequences of Skye's choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.
