Review: The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth - that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

Review: Cold Kiss by Amy Garvey

When her boyfriend, Danny, is killed in a car accident, Wren can’t imagine living without him. Wild with grief, she uses the untamed powers she’s inherited to bring him back. But the Danny who returns is just a shell of the boy she once loved.

Wren has spent four months keeping Danny hidden, while her life slowly unravels around her. Then Gabriel DeMarnes transfers to her school and somehow, inexplicably, he can sense her secret. Wren finds herself drawn to Gabriel, who is so much more alive than the ghost of the boy she loved. But Wren can’t turn her back on Danny or the choice she made for him—and she realizes she must find a way to make things right, even if it means breaking her own heart.

Amy Garvey’s transcendent teen debut is perfect for fans of Shiver and Beautiful Creatures. Wren’s unforgettable voice and story will stay with readers long after the last page is turned.

Review of Legacy

Legacy (Legacy, #1)

The Summary (via Goodreads)

The first boy disappeared on the day of his birth, on a night when the pale yellow moon of the nighttime sky turned red and bathed the heavens in the ghastly color of blood, on the same night the Kingdom of Cokyri abruptly ceased its merciless attack.

Across the land of Hytanica, under the shadow of the crimson moon, infant boys continued to vanish. Not until the blood had faded from the sky did the disappearances stop and the bodies of the murdered infants were found outside the gates of the city, a final word from the greatest enemy Hytanica had ever known. For the next sixteen years, peace reigned, but one mystery remained unsolved. The Cokyrians had abducted forty-nine newborns, but returned only forty-eight bodies.

Now, as seventeen-year-old Princess Alera of Hytanica is besieged from all sides by suitors vying for the Throne, a teenage Cokyrian boy, Narian, is encountered within the walls of her Kingdom, a boy who will show Alera a world where women serve a purpose and not just a husband. As Narian helps Alera find her voice, she struggles against an arranged marriage that will shatter the life she has scarcely begun to live. And when Narian's shocking past is uncovered, and war with Cokyri looms once more, he must fight to defy a fate ordained at his birth.

My Review
So being the teenage reader I am, I get books by looking at covers, prices, and of course the ratings it gets on Goodreads, and other blogs. And well this book looked great (from the cover), it wasn't to expensive, and the reviews were not all that bad. So being who I am, I got it ! Well and let's say i don't completely regret getting it.
First of all Major props Cayla Kluver, being only 3 years older than me she had her debut novel published when she was only 17, so yea that's Huge! And that to, to make a book interesting at this age is also great! Wow, if only I was that brilliant.
The Prologue actually got me really into the book. It had a small history background, that introduced the background story to the whole novel. Since I really enjoy Historical Fiction, the realistic fictional history of the waring "nations" so to speak ( fake nations - so a fantastic nation ?). But that history element kept the story together, and was a great base for the story.
Alera is this head strong, curious 17 year old, to be married to a "king" meaning the one person she despises. I enjoyed Alera's personality , yea she basically she says no to the dashing egotistical Steldor, but she is not one to be treated poorly. She is pro-feminism and doesn't fit into the the Kingdom's Patriarchal society. She grows through out the novel, and her fealings for Narian is just so sweet :) .
So through the whole thing there were two guys, that i must say cought my eye, or more like 3 sorta. So there was Steldor ( egotistical, amazing, sweet if he wants to be, hot - no suprise, soldier, and soon to be king once he marries Alera-if she lets him) , then there is Narian ( Alera's main love intrest, 16, awesome fighter, blue eyes which you can just fall into, and just an amazing guy in general) and the third is a minor character Temerson who is basically the love intrest of Alera's younger sister ( he is a clutz, shy , not very outgoing, sweet, caring, and also a soldier). These three really caught my eye, as evil as Cayla Kluver wanted to make Steldor, he just couldnt be for me. I couldnt see him as the super bad guy, and Narian wasn't my favorite boy for Alera. Maybe because he is a whole year younger ( i just find that the guy has to be older - my opinion though) i just couldn't picture him with her.
This was a good read no doubt, but what I have realised is that teenage YA authros over do the detail. There is alot of unnecassary information, which really drags the story too much. Being almost 500 pages, i felt about 100 pages worth of information was excess. Maybe that it was just me, but i felt if the book was shorter and more to the point, it would have been much better. So considering everything , this book was good not great but good. I would rate it around a 3 or 3.5 /5 , and i feel you should atleast read it once. This is was a good start off to a series, and I can only wait till the next book that will come out.

Anathema Review

The Summary ( via goodreads)

Magic. Lies. Manipulation
Reychel is a slave girl sheltered from the outside world with no hope for escape. The night before her dreaded fifteenth birthday, her best friend disappears, leaving her to face her branding ceremony - when her master’s sigil is burned on the back of her bald scalp – alone. She soon discovers nothing is as it seems when people desperate for freedom beg for her help.
Can Reychel learn to believe in herself in time?

My Review
I got this book for review a couple of weeks ago...so happy i got it ! It sounded great, but the story it self was wow. Megg Jensen did a fantastic job creating an original story, using slavery as a base theme, and then adding magic  and powers, was that cherry on top! I can say this was a great start to the series!
While reading on the airplane, I was mesmerized by the amazing details, and emotions felt by Reychel. You were able to feel the slave girls pains, and her needs to be free. Reychel is one of those characters, you have to adore. Not because she is pretty, or girly, but more because she is Headstrong, Intelligent, and sweet. She tries to be sweet to everyone if she can. Plus she has an amazing talent of storytelling, which really kept the book going!
I was confused, and worried (in a good way) when Reychel was sent to her master, and he treated her all sweetly.  I never actually understood why in the beginning, but you slowly and surely figure it out as the slave girl escapes toward freedom. Reychel meets some amazing people who help her, especially Mark ;)...hmm you guys know what this means..Guy gushing time! So MARK, he is you sweet soldier boy who wants to do the right thing always. He was a great support for Reychel, and you could see while reading they were meant to be. Yes it takes time for them to realise it, but that's what kept the story going on such a high.
While reading you will be surprised, way more than you think you will. Remember that people are not always what they seem....just remember that while reading. You will guessing throughout the book, trying to figure out what will happen. This is not one of those books, where you know what will happen next, it is way beyond this level, all i can say is, that it is a great book.
Like i said earlier i was reading on an airplane, and those rides, can be tiring and boring ( especially when they were 25 hours) so this book was a great piece of not only entertainment, but a great adventure to experience while sitting on those flights ( until my laptop's battery lasted). I have Oubliette as well ( Book 2) and I can not wait to read it ( battery needs to charge...once i get the power converter when we get our lost luggage back). Thanks to Megg Jensen I got to read something so amazing! I would give it a 5/5 :) it was jsut that good :). So go and see if you can get a copy now!

Review: The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness.

Elisa is the chosen one.

But she is also the younger of two princesses, the one who has never done anything remarkable. She can’t see how she ever will.

Now, on her sixteenth birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king—a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs the chosen one, not a failure of a princess.

And he’s not the only one who seeks her. Savage enemies seething with dark magic are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people’s savior. And he looks at her in a way that no man has ever looked at her before. Soon it is not just her life, but her very heart that is at stake.

Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn’t die young.

Most of the chosen do.

MADLY AND WOLFHARDT Launch and Giveaway!!

Madly and Wolfhardt (Book 1 and Book 2 of the Madly Series)

Summary
Madly is your average nearly-eighteen year old girl—for a mermaid princess, that is.

Madly James is thoroughly enjoying her internship in Slumber when the unthinkable happens—there’s a prison break in Atlas, Madly’s home beneath the sea.   A traitor has set free eight Lore, the spirits of what humans know as fairy tales, and they are making their way to Slumber to awaken their descendants.

The first spirit to arrive is that of Ulrich Wolfhardt, a man that was once obsessed with wolves and a young maiden he would follow through the woods.  After a bite from a wolf, Wolfhardt’s obsession with the girl became an unnatural hunger and the young maiden’s grandmother cursed him with a fate worse than death.  And now he’s back…with a vengeance and a bite that can infect others as well.

Madly must learn the identity of Wolfhardt’s descendant and stop him before he kills again and spreads his curse across the earth.  But the only person strong enough to help Madly is Jackson, the Sentinel who vowed to protect her and the one person capable of breaking her heart.  Can Madly resist forbidden love long enough to save the world from Wolfhardt?  Or will she have to sacrifice her heart and her destiny to save the ones she loves?

Review of Divergent

Divergent (Divergent, #1)

The Summary (Goodreads)
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

My Review

I have one word for this book.....Phenomenal! I Loved it so much i read it in under 4 hours :D, and i don't read that fast unless i love the book. Yeah i just had to get that out, now to the real review ;)!

There has been great reviews for this book, and for the longest time i have been trying to get it, and well yesterday i got it and read it, and it blew me away. The book itself was so complex and action packed, that any Hunger Games or Harry Potter fan will adore this book. The Characters were developed, and well- they grew in a sense. Since i don't want to ruin the novel too much ;) I won't go into detail how everyone changes.

Beatrice, later Tris, is this scrawny little sixteen year old who ends up going into Dauntless (aka the place where all the strong brave people are). But over time she becomes a leader, and a survivor. The strong female role really was great for the book, it showed that men aren't the only ones who can kick some major butt ( literally...just read and see). The other characters were great. Some kinda scared me, but other's were down right hilarious. The book had those great comic moments that lighten the mood, so you didn't feel down right depressed while reading, Each character was so unique and so different, the factions they came from were also so well developed. Veronica Roth was able to create a Dystopia that felt so realistic, and vivid, it was amazing...at time's i felt like i wasn't even reading, IT'S THAT GOOD!

But here's the deal there is more than just Tris in the book, much more! there is the amazing, smoking hot, sweet , quiet, yet stern FOUR! He is amazing! Tris's trainer in Dauntless and let's just say there is a lot more to him then i can say right here in the Review. He is so dreamy. Right from the start, he may act like that stern, 'mean', protector, but OMG as the book goes on he is so much more! Just think hot bod of a fighter, Intelligence, and he thinks about others way before himself...really who wouldn't want him!?! He is just so perfect...if someone actually finds him, PLEASE bring him to me! thanks ! He is just so perfect!

Veronica Roth created this amazing world, and let's just say i need Insurgent (book 2) Now! If you haven't read it, you are not doing yourself a favor, you must read it before i come and stalk you down since you haven't. So go and get this book asap! It's way beyond worth it ! Oh yea...rating... 6/5 hands down ;) if not realistically 5/5 for sure ! :D Yea so what are you waiting for...go and get it !! :D

My Review
When I was given this book for review, I checked for online summaries, goodreads, reviews,  etc...to get a hint for what i was up for. Well i must say all that research combined together can not summarize how great this book is.
In the Begging you are hit with BOOM and BAM, the story begins. Not too much extra cherries or toppings on the sundae, it was a perfect intro. While reading this, I was a it lost till about chapter 3. I had really no idea why  Gable was moving to Australia (sorry about that spoiler), but as the story progresses and the twins get older everything falls right into place. While reading i felt that this book is perfect for any age; Starting from Middle grade to adults, it works wonderfully.
For middle-grade and YA readers this worked because it followed the story of a family as a whole and how they had have to basically save the world before evil takes over. Perfect for middle grade because you can see the good versus evil comparison, yet while reading you don't feel it's directed toward younger readers so adult and YA readers would enjoy as well.
There was a lot of very witty humor following the Twins ( Talon and Gage) and to tell you the truth, they are true complete sweethearts. If they were older, they would be the one every girl would fall for, not because they are amazingly hot, but more because they are so imperfect. They are exceedingly handsome no doubt about that, but their humor, sense of adventures, and of course their powers, just make them pure amazing! :D
The humor throughout the book felt so natural to the characters and really helped the book stand together as a whole. Not only was the humor working for it, but the different perspectives of each character, and how the book jumped from evil to good, it really helped keep the evolve the story. The twins had such a huge task ahead of them and i just can't wait to see how they pull through in the next book. I had a great time reading it, and i must say if you enjoy supernatural, adventure, or just want a fun read in general this is a great book to go for. Kate Fuentes did an amazing job and I can not wait for the next book! I would give this book a 4 or a 4.5/5 , it truly was a wonderful read!

I would also like to thank Kate Fuentes for sending me this book! I really enjoyed it :D

Review: Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect.

Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more.

In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart.

Review of Halo by Alexandra Adornetto

The Summary (Goodreads)Halo (Halo, #1)Three angels- Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, the youngest and most human- are sent by Heaven to bring good to a world falling under the influence of darkness. They must work hard to conceal their luminous glow, superhuman powers, and, most dangerous of all, their wings, all the while avoiding all human attachments.

Then Bethany meets Xavier Woods, and neither of them is able to resist the attraction between them. Gabriel and Ivy do everything in their power to intervene, but the bond between Xavier and Bethany seems too strong.

The angel’s mission is urgent, and dark forces are threatening. Will love ruin Bethany or save her?

My Review
Alexandra Adornetto should be congratulated for writing a book in her mid teens. But for me, i had lots of trouble completing this book. When i first picked up the book i was very excited, and really liked the cover! But then when i actually started to read the book I found it difficult to finish. And here is why...
I must say with the whole paranormal fad going on right now in the YA world, it is hard to match up to the amazing books out there. And like most people i end up comparing books to each other, which may ruin the fun of books sometimes, but because of the amazing books out there, Halo wasn't able to match up to others.
To me it felt as though there was too much detail. Usually i am fine with detail, but there was no real story till about 50 to 75 percent of the book was done. People who enjoy lots of detail, and vivid imagery would enjoy this book, but for people like me , you might end up getting very bored, and end up feeling disconnected with the book.
The Characters where just to stereotypical as well. nothing charming, or fantasizing. So there is an angel who want's to be human, who is acting like the stereotypical teen...get's drunk, thinks of sex, and you know falls in love with the Rugby player....then the evil in the book, you knew he was evil right from when we are introduced to him.....it was very predictable.
I have read Alexandra's other books and i enjoyed them much more than Halo. So i like her style, but paranormal romance is not really her thing...in my opinion. the story felt forced, it wasn't very natural. The supposed hottie of the Book Xavier, just wasn't swoon worthy for me. And i just really didn't like the characters and their values really.
I had lot's of trouble reading it after the first chapter, because i wasn't hooked so that first chapter just brought the book down for me. I will read Hades, just for the heck of it. But i recommend this book to those who enjoy really lovey dovey, non action filled books. Otherwise i wouldn't recommend others to read it. i would give it a 1.5/5 if i gave it a rating

Great for 4-6 graders and I felt 8 year - 12 year old's can really empathize with Alice :) . While i read this i became an 8 year old again...and i really had a fun time reading the book :).This is a great summer read for new chapter book readers :)  i would give it 3.5/5 stars :) (PS sorry for the short review)

Review: Halo by Alexandra Adornetto

Halo (Halo, #1)
Three angels- Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, the youngest and most human- are sent by Heaven to bring good to a world falling under the influence of darkness.

Mini Review of Addie on the Inside by James Howe

My Review
Addie on the Inside
This book, was a  really great middle grade read. Also read for the read-a-thon. I had an ARC and i hadn't read the Misfits or Totally Joe. But i really enjoyed this book. Written in poetry style really helped enhance the journey of reading the book. I have no idea how James Howe was able to create a 7th grader so perfectly! I was really able to feel this book, because how Addie discussed being bullied, and life as a 7th grader didn't go great for her, reminded me of middle school. I was bullied a lot, and i really was able to connect. This is a great read, and James Howe did an amazing job portraying Addie and creating this book. i would give it 4.5 / 5 .

The Murder Of Bindy Mackenzie (Ashbury/Brookfield, #3)

My Review

I also enjoyed this one from Jaclyn Moriarty...this was comical, had mystery, and Bindy reminded me of me sometimes...so i was really able to relate. This one was not as great as the year of Secret Assignments but it wasn't bad. I got really annoyed of Bindy after a while, but the book was just to funny to put down. The one guy who was your teenage hottie, was cute..but he turn out to be a ....let me not reveal that ;). It's a great book and meant, for people who enjoy light forget me after you are done reads :) This book would probably receive a 3.5 / 5 because i found it not as great as the previous book, but it wasn't bad :)

Mini Review of The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty

The Year of Secret Assignments (Ashbury/Brookfield, #2)
Three Aussie girls become pen pals with three guys at another school in this delightful, high-spirited read by Feeling Sorry for Celia author Jaclyn Moriarty.
Told entirely through letters, diary entries, emails, and other writing, Moriarty's novel introduces us to Emily, Lydia, and Cassie -- all students at Ashbury High -- who begin writing to their Brookfield High counterparts through the schools' organized pen pal project. Readers learn quickly that each girl has her own writing style and that at two of the Brookfield boys (Seb and Charlie) seem to be smitten with Lydia and Emily. The only trouble is Cassie's pen pal, Matthew, a shady character who first sends her short, threatening letters and then becomes strangely sweet toward her. Nobody can figure out why Cassie keeps writing to him, but after she has a crushing meet-up with Matthew, Cassie discovers -- with the help of her friends and the Brookfield guys -- that he hasn't been honest about his identity. All could be ended there, but when Charlie helps take revenge and Brookfield High gets mysteriously vandalized, the group comes together to deliver justice and save the endangered pen pal project.
Fresh and impressive, Moriarty's novel is lighthearted fare that will keep readers glued to the end. In particular, her knack for capturing different writing styles shines the spotlight on her own talent, giving audiences clear inspiration to try their own diary or journal writing. Clearly centered on the girls while incorporating romance and fun guy personalities -- Rachel Cohn and Meg Cabot fans will eat this up.

My Review
I ended up reading this book  for the Once Upon a Read-a-thon, and let me tell you...it was really funny. After a couple dull books, I really enjoyed reading this book! It's a fun read, and it's all in first person, and the whole story is revealed through letter, typing, diary entries etc...I think that's what made it really fun. There is great teenage Drama for those who enjoy it. The guys are not half bad....not your Daniels, Michaels, or Jules....but your normal hot teenage boy :). So i would recommend this book as just a quick fun read, for anyone and everyone who like's teenage drama :) I shall give this 4/5 , because there is always room for improvement.
